With the rapid development of XR virtual production, XR LED screens and immersive LED solutions are becoming increasingly important tools in film and television production. By combining advanced LED display technology, real-time rendering, and immersive digital environments, XR LED screens are transforming traditional filmmaking workflows and creating new possibilities for visual storytelling.

In recent years, major film and television companies have started exploring the application of XR virtual production. In China, iQIYI has introduced XR virtual filmmaking technology into several projects, including the TV series Fox Spirit Matchmaker and the variety show Vowel Adventure, setting a new example for the application of XR technology in domestic film and television production.

For the production of Fox Spirit Matchmaker, iQIYI transported a large number of XR LED screens to the Hengdian film and television shooting base and built a 2,400-square-meter virtual studio to support part of the production process. The adoption of XR LED screens represents a major shift in filmmaking equipment, technology, and production workflows, bringing new development opportunities to content creation, performance, and production industries.

XR LED Screens Are Transforming the Traditional Filmmaking Workflow

Traditional filmmaking usually follows a linear workflow of planning, shooting, and post-production. However, XR virtual production introduces a new approach by moving digital environment creation and visual preparation earlier into the production process.

Unlike traditional filmmaking methods that rely heavily on green screens and physical sets, XR virtual production uses large-scale LED displays, also known as LED volumes, to create realistic virtual environments directly on set.

Within an LED volume, filmmakers can combine LED screens, real-time rendering engines, and camera tracking systems to produce immersive digital scenes. Actors can perform naturally in virtual environments displayed on the LED wall, while directors and production teams can preview and adjust visual effects during shooting instead of waiting until post-production.

This workflow represents a significant change in the filmmaking process. Through real-time collaboration and visualization, creators can make adjustments earlier, reducing uncertainty and improving production efficiency. Instead of solving visual challenges mainly during post-production, many creative decisions can now be made before and during filming.

Greater Creative Freedom Through XR Virtual Production

One of the biggest advantages of XR virtual production is that it provides filmmakers with greater creative flexibility.

By using an LED volume, filmmakers can create complex digital environments without being limited by physical locations, weather conditions, or traditional set construction. Directors can visualize scenes earlier, allowing creative ideas to be developed and adjusted more efficiently throughout the production process.

The technology also enables in-camera VFX, allowing visual effects to be captured directly during filming rather than being created entirely after shooting. Through in-camera VFX workflows, filmmakers can achieve realistic lighting, reflections, and interactions between real actors and digital environments, creating a more immersive shooting experience.

XR virtual production reduces creative limitations and allows more team members to participate in visual decision-making earlier in the process. This collaborative approach helps transform ideas into finished content more efficiently.

Improving Production Efficiency and Cost Control

Beyond creative advantages, XR LED screens also help improve production efficiency and make shooting schedules more controllable.

In a virtual studio environment, production teams can capture scenes with accurate lighting and reflections provided by the LED wall without being affected by external weather conditions. The real-time “what you see is what you get” workflow allows filmmakers to evaluate visual results immediately, improving shooting efficiency and reducing the need for repeated adjustments.

According to the production team of Fox Spirit Matchmaker, the preparation process, including preliminary discussions and virtual asset creation, took at least six months before on-site shooting began. Although XR virtual production required higher initial investment during the early stages, it provided advantages in post-production cost control, digital asset reuse, visual quality improvement, and production efficiency.

As digital assets can be reused across different projects, XR virtual production also creates long-term value for content production and resource management.

XR LED Screens Improve Shooting Technology and Image Quality

In addition to changing production workflows, XR LED screens are also improving the way filmmakers capture and present images.

According to iQIYI, the XR curved LED wall used during production consisted of 4,224 small LED screens, with a height of 8 meters, a width of 33 meters, and a 192-degree curved surface. The LED wall maintained stable performance during high-speed shooting, while the complete production process—from digital asset creation and LED display presentation to on-site shooting and monitoring—followed 4K HDR wide color gamut production standards.

Modern virtual studios equipped with XR LED screens integrate high-performance LED displays, real-time rendering systems, and advanced tracking technologies to create realistic production environments.

With improvements in rendering nodes, data transmission speed, and real-time rendering technology, the connection between virtual scenes and real-world environments has become increasingly seamless. The use of Unreal Engine 5 has further enhanced the realism of digital scene rendering and improved the integration between virtual and physical production elements.

Expanding Applications of XR Virtual Production

The application of XR virtual production is expanding beyond traditional film and television projects. Today, XR technology is also being explored in variety shows, advertising, live entertainment, and immersive content creation.

The variety show Vowel Adventure adopted XR virtual filmmaking technology and used multiple LED display systems to create an immersive virtual stage. The setup included a 32-meter-by-8-meter curved LED wall, floor LED screens, wall-mounted LED displays, ceiling LED displays, and other screen systems.

Combined with XR, VR, real-time motion capture, virtual characters, virtual shooting, and CG animation technologies, the project demonstrated new possibilities for interactive virtual production experiences and digital content creation.

The Future of XR LED Virtual Production

XR LED screens are changing the relationship between physical production and digital content creation. Compared with traditional green-screen shooting, XR virtual production provides a more immersive and realistic production environment by allowing filmmakers to view digital backgrounds, lighting effects, and virtual scenes directly on set.

By combining LED volumes, in-camera VFX, real-time rendering, and advanced virtual studio technologies, XR production workflows are creating new opportunities for filmmakers and content creators.

At the same time, digital assets created during production can be reused for future projects, improving resource efficiency and expanding the value of digital content creation.

As virtual production technology continues to develop, XR LED screens are expected to play an increasingly important role in the future of film, television, and immersive media production.
