1. What Is LED Display Module?
An LED display module is the basic building block of every LED screen, designed to deliver vibrant images, high brightness, and seamless visual performance. Each module contains a cluster of LED lamps arranged in a precise grid, along with driver ICs, power connectors, and control systems that determine how images and videos appear on.
LED display modules come in various pixel pitches (distance between pixels), allowing for different resolutions and viewing distances. From small indoor displays to massive outdoor billboards, the LED display module determines the resolution, color accuracy, and durability of the entire LED screen.
Understanding the core structure and key performance parameters of LED display modules is crucial for anyone involved in designing, building, or maintaining an LED display system. A clear grasp of these fundamentals helps ensure optimal performance, easier maintenance, and a longer lifespan of the display. Let’s take a closer look at the main components that make up an LED display module.
2. LED Screen Module Components
The LED screen module is a key component of the finished LED display. An LED display module integrates multiple components, each contributing to performance and reliability. Mainly composed of LEDs, PCB, IC, Frame, Connector, Cables, Screws, resistors, and capacitors!
2.1 LEDs
The LED lamp is the light-emitting element and the most visible part of the LED module. It directly affects the brightness, color accuracy, and lifespan of the entire display. Can be divided into DIP LEDs, SMD LEDs, GOB LEDs, and COB LEDs.
2.1.1 DIP LEDs
DIP LEDs are in-line packages. Generally speaking, DIP LEDs are primarily used for outdoor LED screens with large pixel pitches, such as P10, P16, and P20.
2.1.2 SMD LEDs
SMD LED is a surface-mount light-emitting diode. We have 3 different brands of SMD LEDs from different packaging companies.
For the Indoor LED Display Module, we have San’an, Kinglight, and Nationstar LEDs available. For the Outdoor LED Display Module, we have Kinglight, Nationstar Copper Wire, and Nationstar Golden Wire LEDs available.
Furthermore, we have different sizes of SMD LEDs suitable for different applications. For indoor, we have SMD1010, SMD1212, SMD1515, SMD2020, SMD2121 and for outdoor, we have SMD1415, SMD1921, SMD2525, SMD2727, SMD3535. Below are the LED pictures for your reference.
Take SMD1010 for example, the apparent size is 1.0×1.0×0.65mm, the size is small, and it can be used as a screen with a smaller pitch, which is more suitable for the field of indoor high-definition LED display. As for SMD3535, the apparent size is 3.5×3.5×2.8mm, the size is much bigger than SMD1010. It is suitable for outdoor P6, P8, and P10 LED displays.
2.1.3 GOB LEDs
GOB LEDs is the abbreviation of glue on board. It has transparent material on the LED module surface. It protects LED lamps and makes the module waterproof.
The advantage of GOB LEDs is that they are hard to damage because of the Glue protection, so some customers use GOB LEDs for LED displays. The disadvantage of GOB LEDs is that the GOB LED Module is hard to repair when the LED is broken, and the LED module contrast ratio is not as good as the SMD LED module.
2.1.4 COB LEDs
COB (Chip on Board) is an advanced LED packaging technology that directly mounts multiple LED chips onto the PCB surface, forming a single, integrated light source. Unlike SMD or DIP technology, COB eliminates the need for individual lamp encapsulation, resulting in a smoother, more robust surface and superior optical performance.
2.2 PCB
The PCB board (Printed Circuit Board) serves as the foundation of the module, connecting and supporting all the electronic components. It provides stable electrical pathways for power and signal transmission. A well-designed PCB guarantees heat dissipation, reduces signal interference, and maintains color consistency across the screen. Multi-layer PCBs are preferred for advanced LED modules to enhance performance and durability.
2.3 Driver IC
The driver IC acts as the “brain” of the LED module. It converts digital image signals into current control for each LED pixel. IC is an integrated circuit; it’s a small black block with pins on the circuit board.
High-performance driver ICs ensure smooth gray scale, high refresh rates, and stable brightness. They help prevent flickering and ghosting, delivering clear and sharp visuals even in high-speed video playback or camera shooting environments.
For the outdoor LED module, our standard IC is ICN2038S IC, and for the indoor LED Module, our standard IC is ICN2037IC with both refresh rates at 1920Hz. We also have MBI5124IC, ICN2153IC, and MIB5153IC available for a higher refresh rate to 3840Hz.
The higher the refresh rate, the clearer the picture. The picture below will show you what the LED display effect is for the 2038S and 2153 IC.
2.4 Frame
The LED display module frame, sometimes called the mask, protects the LED lamps from mechanical damage and enhances contrast by reducing reflection. It also provides precise alignment during assembly. Frames are typically made from high-quality injection-molded plastic materials that resist deformation, aging, and UV exposure, ensuring long-term stability in different environments.
2.5 Connectors
Signal and power connectors link the LED module to the LED cabinet and control system. These connectors transmit both image data and electrical power efficiently. High-quality connectors ensure secure and stable connections, minimize voltage drop, and allow for easy installation and maintenance of the LED display.
2.6 Cables
Cables are responsible for transmitting both power and data signals between modules and the main control unit.
Power cables deliver consistent voltage to each module. Data cables transmit high-speed digital signals from the receiving card.
Using well-shielded, durable cables prevents signal interference and guarantees stable display performance.
